LG will establish 'LG AI Research', an artificial intelligence (AI) think tank, on the 7th as part of its digital transformation strategy to create better customer values.
LG AI Research is an organization dedicated to AI that secures the latest AI source technologies and solves AI challenges at the group level.
In a congratulatory message to the launch of LG AI Research, Koo Kwang-mo, the chairman and CEO of LG Corporation(LG Corp.) emphasized, "The purpose of AI that LG pursues is to help customers' lives be more valuable beyond technology," adding, "In the process, LG AI Research will play a key role in developing ways of change and innovation on behalf of the group.".
He said, "We will gather the best talents and partners to challenge the difficult problems of the world to the fullest and support it to develop into the center of the global AI ecosystem."
LG AI Research will study the latest AI source technologies such as next-generation voice, image recognition and analysis technology, language processing technology that enables natural situation recognition and conversation based on deep learning, and data intelligence that predicts optimal judgment through big data analysis. To this end, it will also establish a high-performance computing system that enables large-scale data-based deep learning research.
It also will play a role in solving challenges within affiliates such as predicting battery life and capacity and finding new drug candidate materials through AI research.
The new research organization plans to work with global AI research institutes, Seoul National University, and Toronto University to jointly secure source technologies and actively create a global AI ecosystem.
LG AI Research will be placed under LG Management Development Institute with the participation of 16 affiliates including LG Electronics, LG Display, LG Chem, LG U+, and LG CNS, and invest about 200 billion won in securing global talents and AI research and development for three years.
In particular, LG AI Research plans to attract world-class talents by preparing its own personnel system, evaluation and compensation system based on the expertise and competence of human resources and providing exceptional treatment.
For the members, it will create a quick, flexible, agile-based research environment where they can choose their own research instead of a fixed team.
With the launch of the institute, LG hired Honglak Lee, a 44-year-old professor at the University of Michigan, who is a world-renowned AI scholar and a research scientist at 'Google Brain', Google's AI research organization. Professor Lee will serve as the first new ‘CSAI (Chief Scientist of AI)’ position in the industry to secure AI source technologies and establish mid- to long-term AI technology strategy.
CSAI Honglak Lee holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in the U.S. and is a professor of computer engineering at the University of Michigan. He is a world-renowned authority in machine learning and was selected as one of the world's top 10 AI researchers at the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE) in 2013.
As the head of the LG AI Research, Kyunghoon Bae (45), who was in charge of the LG Sciencepark AI Division was appointed, and will be in charge of establishing and implementing LG's AI strategy with CSAI Honglak Lee.
LG AI Research plans to expand the number of key researchers to about 100 next year by recruiting highly talented people in the AI field. LG AI Research will play the role of fostering 1,000 AI experts in LG group by 2023 running a customized education program under its leadership.
"We will recruit the best AI talents and nurture the group's AI talent experts to become a true AI company that leads the global market," said Kyunghoon Bae, head of LG AI Research, adding "We will provide AI talents with opportunities to solve various real-world problems and create an environment where talented people can study to their fullest."
Meanwhile, LG AI Research held 'AI Talk Concert' on the morning of the 7th to celebrate its launch and discuss AI's latest research results online. Google Research's chief scientist Quoc Le, Kakao Brain's CEO Seungki Park, Toronto University professor Ted Sergent, KAIST chair professor Song Chong and Seoul National University professor Byungtak Zhang have attended in this event.
