LG will develop Korea's AI ecosystem through joint research with the AI Institute of Seoul National University (AIIS).
On June 16, LG Sciencepark and Seoul National University (SNU) signed the "LG Sciencepark-AIIS Joint Research Agreement" at Seoul National University located in Gwanak-gu, Seoul. The signing ceremony was attended by Vice President Kyung-hoon Bae of the AI Division at LG Sciencepark and Byoung-Tak Zhang, Director of AIIS.
AIIS was established in December 2019 as the largest AI research organization in Korea, led by 270 SNU professors and with the large-scale cooperation of more than 2,000 AI researchers at Seoul National University.
This joint research collaboration has been promoted to integrate the academic outcomes of AIIS into the industry.
LG plans to strengthen its network in the AI sector by holding regular meetings to share research outcomes with AIIS, provide opportunities for joint research, and cultivate human resources through internships and personnel exchanges.
As AIIS is conducting the broadest research in Korea on original AI technologies, such as reasoning and learning, language and cognition, vision and perception, data intelligence, AI systems, AI semiconductors, robotics, and autonomous driving, as well as AI applications to the fields of medical, new drugs, finance, humanities, media, education, materials, and chemistry, this collaboration is expected to create synergy with LG, which is building a related business portfolio.
The LG Sciencepark AI Division establishes the group's mid- to long-term artificial intelligence strategy, discovers business models, and coordinates cooperation among subsidiaries to create synergy.
"Like the joint research collaboration with AIIS, we will pursue wide-ranging cooperation with companies, universities, and research institutes that have competitiveness as part of open innovation to help invigorate the domestic AI ecosystem," said Kyung-hoon Bae, Vice President of the LG Sciencepark AI Division.
AIIS Director Byoung-Tak Zhang also said, "Collaboration between LG Sciencepark, which uses AI to find solutions to various problems, and AIIS, which has competent and creative AI experts, will create synergy. SNU researchers also expect to conduct meaningful studies while solving problems at hand with companies."
Meanwhile, LG has been actively promoting open innovation through partnerships with AI-related academia.
In January of last year, LG Electronics joined hands with KAIST to open the "LG Electronics-KAIST AI Advanced Course." It is operating 10 courses in 4 areas including video, audio, control, and advanced algorithms.
The company also operated the "Manufacturing AI Leader Course" for 20 employees who were selected as AI leaders for three months from April this year jointly with Sungkyunkwan University. Participants learned core theories related to AI and big data from professors of the College of Software and Department of Systems Management Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University and performed problem solving tasks in connection with the field.
LG Sciencepark also signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Toronto, Canada for joint research on AI for enterprises in May last year and is conducting research on the latest AI technology for application to industries, logistics, and manufacturing sites.
