LG AI Research Rises to the Challenge of Super-giant AI
2021.05.17LG AI Research, LG's dedicated AI organization, revealed its plan to invest KRW 100 billion on building and developing large scale computing infrastructure to rapidly process a vast amount of data for the next three years at its “AI Talk Concert” held online on May 17.
The “Super-giant AI” resembles the human brain structure that comprehensively and autonomously thinks, learns, judges, and acts, not limited to any specific use, by learning vast amounts of data based on computing infrastructure capable of large-capacity computation. To that end, LG AI Research plans to build large-scale computing infrastructure capable of processing 9,570 trillion times per second and launch ‘Super Giant AI’ with 600 billion parameters in the second half of this year. This is more than three times the 175 billion parameters possessed by GPT-3, the most powerful super-giant language model in existence.
Since its launch at the end of last year, LG AI Research has continued to build, in full scale, a research system for source proprietary technologies to overcome the technological limitations of deep learning, and offer customer AI to raise customer value and enterprise AI research to increase business efficiency. This additional investment is aimed at taking a leap forward and usher in a new era of deep learning. Super-giant AI as an Integrated Expert
Deep learning-based AI technology has rapidly expanded its base since AlphaGo of DeepMind Technologies created quite a stir in society in 2016. In addition to chatbots that talk naturally like human beings and self-driving cars based on video recognition, deep learning technology has been widely used in various business areas such as discovering new substances, developing new drugs, optimizing product designs, automating processes, and predicting future demand. Due to the nature of digital technology, as long as one secures a certain level of performance in a particular field, it is applicable to a wide variety of fields, and its far-reaching power has also continued to increase.

For example, the plan is to offer a learning experience for practical communication with various people and numerous educational courses to create AI that is capable of communicating at a level on par with communication experts trained for decades. Once LG AI developed in this manner is applied to customer consultation chatbots and callbots, we will be able to analyze customer sentiment revealed in sentences and conversations to provide natural and satisfying services. LG AI Research plans to offer customer consultations that match the finest professional counselors in customer service centers, while developing AI that is capable of even signing contracts with B2B customers.

LG AI Research plans to automatically analyze academic papers and patents in the field of chemistry with super-giant AI and build a database. It will not only recognize molecular structures in the papers and abstract physical information from tables but also extract various experimental conditions from the main text to build a comprehensive substance database.
Once this effort becomes a reality, AI-based discovery of new substances will pick up pace and advance the development of electric vehicles that drive further and last longer with high-capacity long-life batteries and develop high-efficiency light-emitting elements to launch better display products. Also, we will be able to discover eco-friendly plastic materials and bequeath a healthier Earth to our descendants.
Furthermore, LG AI Research will be able to develop customized anti-cancer vaccinations and drugs without any side effects that have been available only with the help of many immunologists and genetic engineers.
