Collaboration Between EXAONE and Parsons Expands Opportunities for Designers
2022.09.13LG AI Research takes on another challenge to advance AI services that assist designers in their work.
On September 12th (local time), LG AI Research and Parsons, the top design school in the United States, established the “LG AI Research & TNS Parsons Collaboration.”
Through this partnership, LG AI Research plans to conduct joint research on advanced AI technologies that can be applied to the design industry with Parsons having world-renowned experts in fashion and media.
In order to accomplish this, LG AI Research developed the EXAONE Atelier service, a creative platform that enables designers to collaborate with AI in the creative design process. EXAONE Atelier is a platform that was created based on the notion that artists who are insatiably in search of new images devote a great deal of time to bringing their ideas to life.
LG's super-giant AI EXAONE learns data from more than 350 million high-resolution images and text, thereby generating 256 high-resolution images in just 7 minutes with a single sentence. In order to create a platform capable of generating images that are essential for artists, LG AI Research allows artists to record their daily experiences with various images such as photos and drawings on the platform so that EXAONE can learn from them.
An official from the LG AI Research talked about the authenticity of EXAONE Atelier by stating, “It is anticipated that artists will be able to build their own creative design concepts using EXAONE by repeating the process of creating images that did not previously exist. We hope this will be a chance to witness the creative potential of artists beyond the concept of AI-human collaboration simply producing novel images,” and added, “EXAONE Atelier intends to contribute significantly to the work of artists.”
The Dean of Parsons at Parsons School of Design, Ben Barry, was unable to conceal his eagerness for the collaboration. “With the leadership of Professor Jeongki Lim, this partnership between Parsons and LG will cultivate critical dialogue and insights about the relationship between AI and creativity. It will provide opportunities for Parsons students and faculty to work alongside LG industry leaders to explore emerging issues that arise when human and non-human actors engage in collective creative practice. This research will create a research agenda for creativity and technology that will impact industry and academic practice for years to come."
Cynthia Lawson Jaramillo, Dean of the School of Design Strategies of Parsons School of Design, added, “I'm delighted to see this partnership between LG AI Research and Parsons School of Design. For more than 125 years, Parsons has been committed to the forefront of art and design education. This partnership further solidifies that commitment, as what is more future-facing than exploring the intersections of art, design, creativity, and AI.”
EXAONE Atelier is a new level of super-giant AI designer platform that is anticipated to assist a great number of artists in creating designs on an unprecedented scale.
On September 14 (local time), LG AI Research and Parsons will co-host a symposium titled “The Inaugural TNS Creativity & AI Symposium.” At the symposium, researchers from the LG AI Research and professors and graduates from the Parsons School of Design will share real-world applications of AI in the creative field and discuss future research directions and applications of AI in the creative field.
In addition, LG AI Research is hosting a hackathon using EXAONE Atelier. Students from Parsons who participate in the EXAONE Atelier Hackathon will work for two days starting September 17 (local time) using EXAONE Atelier on the design concept they wish to implement and then present the results. LG AI Research plans to expand this year's hackathon in Parsons to the entire United States and Europe to enable more schools to participate.
Kyunghoon Bae, chief of LG AI Research, expressed his desire for this collaboration by stating, “Through a deeper level of collaboration with Parsons, LG AI Research would like to develop an expert AI, which could maximize human creativity and productivity by understanding not only thoughts and ideas but also knowhow and expertise from a variety of expert humans. Moreover, we will continue to improve and polish the EXAONE Atelier to become as a state-of-the-art global ideation AI platform that helps all humans become designers and artists as long as they have ideas, not just as a drawing tool.”
As a result of the partnership, LG AI Research and Parsons will exhibit creative activities in various fields for the next three years. In addition, LG AI Research plans to expand the creative AI ecosystem by collaborating with renowned design schools and companies in Korea and abroad, starting with Parsons.
LG AI Research, known for its groundbreaking research on AI and human collaboration using “Tilda,” an AI artist which can create new images (Text to Image) by understanding the context of language powered by the super-giant AI EXAONE and made a debut as an AI artist at the New York Fashion Week in February, will showcase a brand new design-centric AI through this collaboration.
