LG Chem has partnered with Yonsei University(hereinafter referred to as Yonsei) to develop future technologies for battery materials and jointly foster the talents.
On the 7th, LG Chem announced that the company signed a memorandum of understanding(MOU) with Yonsei at its Shinchon campus in Sedaemun-gu, Seoul in establishing a ‘battery material industry-academia cooperation center.’ The signing event was attended by Yu Jiyung, CTO of LG Chem, Myung Jae-min, Dean of Yonsei’s College of Engineering, and Lee Sang-young, a professor at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.
Through the cooperation, LG Chem and Yonsei will conduct joint research through the establishment of an industry-academia cooperation center for battery materials to preemptively secure next-generation technology. With Yonsei’s extensive research experience, know-hows, and outstanding human resources, it is expected to create synergy with LG Chem’s advanced facilities and infrastructure.
The fields that the two organizations will embark on include ▲long-lived silicon-based anode materials ▲high-stability sulfide-based electrolytes ▲eco-friendly electrode binders. The technologies are to be used in next-generation batteries while both organizations plan to further discover and advance research projects in the future.
LG Chem and Yonsei will also operate manpower dispatch and industry-academia scholarship programs to nurture battery material talents. Researchers from Yonsei participating in research assignments can conduct experiments by using LG Chem’s research facilities, or LG Chem’s researchers can conduct joint research at the university. LG Chem plans to give preferential hiring benefits to outstanding talents who participate in the joint research projects.
Myung Jae-min, Dean of Yonsei’s College of Engineering, said “In securing the differentiated technological competitive edge in the secondary battery market where global competition is already intense, the signing ceremony is indeed a meaningful cooperation considering the status of next-generation battery materials that has increasingly become important.” The dean added “We expect to make a great deal of contribution to LG Chem’s world’s best battery material technology and take it to the next level”.
Yu Jiyung, CTO of LG Chem, mentioned “We expect to expedite our effort in acquiring the next-generation source technology through our cooperation with Yonsei that leads battery material research” and added “The company will support research and continue nurturing outstanding talents to develop future battery materials technology that provides the best value to customers”.
